Quantum Security in Blockchains
Quantum computers threaten the cryptographic foundations of today's blockchains and, consequently, the security of digital assets. Digital signatures, wallets, and custody systems are particularly vulnerable. The potential emergence of cryptographically relevant quantum computers between 2029 and 2033 makes an early transition to quantum-resistant cryptography essential. The greatest challenge lies in coordinating this transition across the entire blockchain ecosystem.
In this position paper, with Prioval serving as Lead Editor, the Swiss Blockchain Federation recommends developing common standards, ensuring early preparedness among financial institutions and infrastructure providers, and introducing a semi-annual Quantum Readiness Report to transparently assess migration progress. These initiatives could strengthen Switzerland's leading position in digital assets and establish the country internationally as a "Quantum-Safe Jurisdiction for Digital Assets."
